| Lake Tahoe is an outdoor lover's paradise. The resort town hugs the California-Nevada border making it an ideal destination for all seasons. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year and 395 inches of annual snowfall, it's not out of the question to spend the morning on a golf course and the afternoon on one of Tahoe's famous ski resorts. This is just one of the many things that makes Lake Tahoe a top-notch travel destination. Most visitors to Lake Tahoe come for the world-class skiing. The area boasts 19 ski and snowboarding resorts - some of which aren't suited for the faint of heart. But, Lake Tahoe has more to offer than skiing. There are numerous casinos, golf courses and restaurants, and nearby Reno is a destination unto itself that shouldn't be missed. There are two very distinct sides to Lake Tahoe, so it's important to have an idea of which area you want to stay in before planning your visit.

North Lake Tahoe |
| This part of Lake Tahoe has fewer casino hotels than the South rim, but if you elect to stay at the Cal-Neva Resort, you'll really get up close and personal to the state line, which runs right through the casino hotel's swimming pool. However, if the novelty of the experiencing the state line isn't your thing, most of Lake Tahoe skiing is close by making North Lake Tahoe the epicenter of the resort town's most popular activity. Second to skiing in this part of the country is river rafting, and the Truckee River is accessible from Tahoe City, which is a hop, skip and a jump from North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe also is an ideal place to stay if you plan to spend time in nearby Reno or Carson City as it's easier to access those tourist areas from the North rim.

South Lake Tahoe |
| South Lake Tahoe is closely related to Las Vegas as it's defined by its large casino hotels and big shows. South Lake Tahoe is where you'll book your boat cruises and hot air balloon rides. And much like Las Vegas, it's where you'll find dozens of restaurants, shops and nightlife options. It's the pulse of Lake Tahoe, whereas the North Rim
is the outdoor mecca. If you are in South Lake Tahoe and want to ski, Heavenly Ski Resort offers year-round activities.
